AI Already Took My Job, Could You Be Next?

Now, I’m looking for a new job. If you’re searching for an experienced Flutter developer to craft an amazing product together, please let me know.

As an experienced full-stack JavaScript and Flutter developer, I once worked for a company with its own product. When I was invited to join this company, I noticed a few competitors with much better alternatives, so I asked the recruiter, “How are they going to win?” The recruiter told me to ask the CEO directly.

During the interview, when I was facing the CEO, I completely forgot to ask that question, perhaps thinking they had already figured it out. Unfortunately, things didn’t go well. 6 months later, I had crafted the front-end of the product, but the company was not making money. It could have been the price point, marketing, or the competitors being too strong.

At the start of 2023, the CEO set a new direction: Web 3, blockchain, and cryptocurrencies. They held a series of strategy meetings and asked everyone to brainstorm ideas for incorporating blockchain and improving the product.

The Ideas Remained Just Ideas

The ideas stayed as just that — ideas. Nothing was actually implemented. When ChatGPT appeared, the CEO announced, “We are an AI company.” A few months later, I was told, “We are focusing on AI and data, and we no longer need a front-end role. You’re a very good coder, but we can’t use your full potential.” I was then fired.

Things didn’t go as expected. AI didn’t replace me — it took my job long before “AI programmer” was mature enough. Over the years, we’ve heard a lot of buzzwords: big data, web 3, crypto, blockchain, metaverse, etc. None of them have really changed our lives. Is generative AI just another buzzword? Only time will tell.
